Did You Know? Females In Congress Reach Record High
The number of females serving in the 110th Congress has reached record levels in the House of Representatives and the Senate. Here are some other interesting facts about women in politics from the Center for Women and Politics at Rutgers University:
- There are 74 women serving in the U.S. House (including those delegates from the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam). There are 16 women serving in the Senate.
- California has the largest number of women serving in Congress, while Delaware, Iowa, Mississippi and Vermont have none.
- Jeannette Rankin, R-Mont., was the first women to serve in the House of Representatives in 1917. After a two-year term, she served again from 1941-1942. Rebecca Latimer Felton, D-Ga., was the first woman Senator in 1922, serving a one day term.
- Nydia Velázquez, D-N.Y., is the first Puerto Rican woman to serve in Congress. She is also the Chairwoman House Small Business Committee.
